New Students

Starting a yoga practice is exciting, but it can also be overwhelming. At Riverside, we aim to make yoga as accessible and approachable as possible, and want to make sure you feel comfortable and calm for your first class with us. If you have any questions we do not answer here, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Tips for New Students

  1. Start by taking our Yoga Basics class. This class breaks down the foundation of the practice and is perfect for new students. And take advantage of our new member special–1 month of unlimited yoga for $49.

  2. Arrive at least 15 minutes early. That will give you plenty of time to fill out paperwork and prepare yourself for class.

  3. Drink plenty of water! It’s important to stay hydrated before and after class. You are more than welcome to bring a water bottle into the studio to place next to your mat to drink during class.

  4. Avoid eating a heavy meal before practice. We recommend a light meal 1-2 hours before class starts.

  5. Wear comfortable clothes. We recommend clothing that will not restrict your movement; clothing that lies close to the body is best so it does not get in the way as you move.

  6. Yoga is typically practiced barefoot. Shoes can be left at the door.

  7. Silence your cell phone and leave it in the cubbies outside the studio. Let this be your technology-free time.

  8. Tell us about yourself! Don’t be afraid to talk to the instructor before class. Tell us if you are brand new to yoga or if there are any injuries you are working with. Like with any other form of exercise, please check with your physician before practice if you have a serious injury or medical condition.

  9. If nothing else…just breathe.
